# DEAD AGAIN 1.23 — CRITICS DEATHMATCH

Twenty-one simulated critics entered. The game survived.

This was not a vote. Proposals had to survive direct objections from critics with conflicting priorities. A proposal lost if it added clutter, weakened retro identity, damaged readability, altered certified physics without evidence, or solved a problem that did not actually exist.

## ROUND 1 — MORE MUSIC vs MORE SILENCE

Vera (chiptune): strengthen zone motifs.
PC-Speaker Purist: reduce them.
Industrial Sound Critic: spend sonic bandwidth on machinery instead.

Decision: DRAW. 1.21's sparse music stays unchanged.

Why: the motifs already establish regional memory without occupying the whole soundscape. More voices would modernise the texture; less music would throw away useful identity. Machinery audio remains a future option only where it communicates state.

## ROUND 2 — MORE ANIMATION vs PIXEL READABILITY

Pixel Animator: add skid/brace/panic poses.
VGA Palette Nerd: do not increase visual noise.
Speedrun Commentator: silhouettes must read instantly.

Decision: CURRENT HUMAN DAVE WINS.

Why: Dave already has distinct head, torso, arms, separate legs, boots, jump/fall poses and idle behaviour. More frames are not automatically more expressive at 320x200. No physics or sprite-size change.

## ROUND 3 — ATTRACT MODE vs GET OUT OF MY WAY

Arcade Cabinet Designer: title-screen vignette demonstrating a ghost holding a switch.
DOS Purist: start the game immediately.
Old Manual Writer: the premise fits in one sentence.
Mean Reviewer: stop adding systems.

Decision: ATTRACT MODE LOSES FOR 1.23.

Why: it is a good idea, but not yet necessary. The tagline now says the rule plainly. An attract demo is only justified later if real players fail to understand the ghost premise.

## ROUND 4 — MORE STATS vs RETRO AUSTERITY

Speedrun Commentator: PBs and rivals are useful.
Mean Reviewer: title screen has become a dashboard.
Shareware Archaeologist: old games reveal information economically.
Mobile Critic: tiny text is especially costly on phones.

Decision: AUSTERITY WINS.

Implemented:
- removed the permanent P/A/R/V "MEDALS" line
- removed the permanent YOU/ROBOT/RIVAL timing matrix
- title screen now shows one compact contextual status line
- race benchmark appears only when race mode is engaged
- Robot/Rival systems remain fully intact; only their presentation is quieter

This is the principal code change in 1.23.

## ROUND 5 — HARDER TELEGRAPHS vs HORROR ATMOSPHERE

Accessibility Critic: state must not rely on colour.
Horror Critic: THE BLACK and BELOW need absence and uncertainty.
Game-Feel Critic: uncertainty about *rules* is bad difficulty.

Decision: ACCESSIBILITY WINS ON GAMEPLAY OBJECTS; HORROR WINS ON DECORATION.

The 1.21 exit glyph/lamp and hazard motion warnings stay. No extra giant warning icons are added. Horror can corrupt scenery, text and music, but not collision-state legibility.

## ROUND 6 — MOBILE CHARM vs MOBILE PRECISION

Handheld Critic: preserve the physical Fisheggs handheld.
Mobile Action Critic: landscape is serious-play mode and A/B must dominate.
Demoscene Aesthete: the custom shell is part of the game's authorship.

Decision: ALL THREE SURVIVE.

The dedicated handheld stays. Landscape remains the precision layout. No new meta buttons are added.

## ROUND 7 — NEW LEVEL CHANGES vs CERTIFIED CAMPAIGN

Puzzle Critic: remove dead traversal and chore deaths.
Robot Dave: all 45 levels are executable.
Mean Reviewer: do not redesign from theory alone.

Decision: NO GEOMETRY CHANGES.

A level should only be edited now when actual play identifies friction. Robot solvability cannot prove human fun, but critic speculation cannot prove a room is bad either.

## FINAL SURVIVORS

1. Human Dave.
2. Current movement physics.
3. Sparse five-zone music.
4. Strong hazard telegraphing.
5. Battered CRT and Fisheggs handheld.
6. Robot/Rival systems, but visually demoted.
7. 45-level campaign unchanged.
8. Secrets/mastery remain, without demanding constant screen space.
9. The one-sentence premise: EVERY DEATH LEAVES A WAY FORWARD.
10. Restraint.

## KILLED IN THE DEATHMATCH

- more music layers
- more saturated UI colours
- more sprite animation for animation's sake
- an attract-mode feature without evidence it is needed
- more permanent statistics on level select
- new meta controls
- speculative level redesigns
- any movement-physics change

## Editorial rule after 1.23

> New work must either remove friction, improve comprehension, or deepen atmosphere without obscuring play.

"More stuff" is no longer sufficient justification.
